Instant Gratification - "I need it now"
Along with the information age came the ability to obtain the information we need or want quickly and in an easy to understand form. This was furthered by mediums that spoon fed us and almost digested the meaning for us. The news is not only fast but also summarized so we don't have to think or use our imagination. Firstly it was radio, for the first time the news was available fast, accurate and sometimes dramatized. For example the tragic crash of the Pride of Germany the dirigible "Hindenberg", You not only were told about the crash but had front row seat through the eyes of a reporter on the radio on the scene including much emotion and great accurate detail. Through the technology of the time you actually "lived" or experienced an event that became as large as life size. You actually joined those on the site of the crash as witnesses to an earth-shaking event. In the same era aliens were invading radio presented a play about the war of the worlds, so believable that thousands thought the earth. The coverage of these events were significant in that thousand of people who had know connection with the event became emotionally involved and practically became part of the news. This all took place instantly with tremendous impact. Before instant communication technology events often effected a few that were in the immediate area or were directly affected by the outcome. The speed and immediacy are only part of the story the dynamics are the true reason behind the emotional impact of the news.
