Then of course we must consider the education as well as lifestyle of those we communicate with, for instance two academics tend to use different terms than two business persons or two Medical Doctors or computer nerds.   Keep in mind that there is common ground with everyone and as long as we take the trouble to meet others half way the communication process will be successful.

Inter-personal communication - a transaction

To understand how we can be successful in communicating with others is to recognize the process and what really goes on between two people when they interact.   Every conversation is a transaction or a trade takes place.   Often you trade your interest for their interest.   They tell you what is interesting or effecting them and then you tell them what is your immediate concern.   When a successful trade of interests take place synergy is developed and a warm relationship can result.   Now in business its' important to bond with the other person whether they are a client supervisor or fellow worker.   The way to bond with another person is to share an interest you may have in common with them and then show an interest in them.   This can be accomplished quickly but should not be a shallow statement such as "How are you doing?" more likely you should inquire after their family or a specific interest of theirs, family, sports, or business interests then try to show how you have a personal interest in the same area.   A great salesperson will tell that they become an expert instantly on just about anything their client is interested in.   I had a yearly luncheon with two brothers that owned a nation wide carpet firm, they were elders in a certain church.   For that luncheon I became intensely interested in church affairs and made sure I could discuss the subject at length with them.   I enjoyed the discussion and learned a lot from them as a result, so a trade certainly took place there.   You are a people person and demonstrating your interest in one you are talking to assures that they will listen to you and your views and you will be successful in getting your points across, others will be receptive to your ideas if you are to them.
