Keeping Your Communication Skills
Updated and Sharp

One of the ongoing concerns is that as you gain experience, you also acquire poor communication habits.   These develop as we either receive or generate negative feedback from ourselves or others.   We must deal with each as it occurs for they don't go away, these negative messages are stored in the subconscious and can affect your attitudes thus your performance.   Reprogramming your subconscious is needed before improvements in performance can take place or in other words, we can learn from our mistakes.

Methods that can be used to refresh your communication skills are:

1.   Take an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper and list skill sets required for excellent communication.   Recalling the basics of excellent communication will remind you of them and re-instill their validity and importance.

2.   Record your delivery and review it critically, If you video it then pay attention to Body language , if you identify some body language habits that need improvement, practice delivering your presentation in front of a mirror.   This will result in automatic positive adjustments taking place.

3.   Increase your preparation time As your experience base grows, you may feel you need less preparation time.   Because you have built up a backlog of speeches you can modify for the occasion you will save creative time.   However the time you must spend on "blabbing" your speech is important in that it builds self-confidence and re-programs your subconscious in a positive way.   Your delivery will be smooth And improved by the practice.   Experienced speakers often decrease practice time and as a result experience mind blocks and a less successful presentation.
